Yesterday, Jersey College for Girls held a very special, live-streamed College assembly with Jersey General Hospital staff, where they presented the hospital with 32 student designed ‘thank you’ posters.
JCG students have spent the past few months designing these posters to recognise the monumental effort that everyone at the hospital has gone to this past year. They didn’t want their efforts to be forgotten as life begins to return to ‘normal’. They wanted to thank each and every staff member and health worker in all departments to ensure no one was missed. They were particularly keen to focus on the departments which are not frontline, such as Pathology, which supports the JCG Biomedical programme we run every year during the summer holiday.
This project was part of the JCG Serves scheme which runs consistently throughout the school year and is designed to encourage students to volunteer and support their local community.
Sandra Coleman, Teacher of Biology, says, ‘During the first wave of the Covid pandemic we stood outside at 8pm on a Thursday clapping our hands for the critical workers working in health care doing their best to protect us, at risk to themselves. However, during the second wave, when hospitals started to fill up and cases rose rapidly, no one clapped, no one acknowledged the many departments and staff who were working tirelessly in their duties to prevent further infection and to care for those already inflicted.
With the help of Rob Sainsbury, a Managing Director the of hospital, we devised a list of departments who had to change their way of practice to accommodate our new distancing world or had to go above and beyond their expected roles. Although deserving of so much more than a simple thank you, each of our 30 tutor groups from Years 7-11 collaboratively created a beautiful, bespoke poster to show our appreciation of what our wonderful hospital staff did in the face of this pandemic.’
Robert Sainsbury, Group Managing Director, Health and Community Services, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive these wonderful posters. They really are fantastic and we can clearly see the huge amount of work that has gone into their production. Posters like these are hugely appreciated by our staff. We will make sure that these posters are put on display here in the Hospital so everyone can see them. Thank you to the students and teachers for organising this wonderful gesture.”
