12 Tips for Healthier Tech Habits
- No Screens one hour before bed: Encourage all screens off at least 1 hour before bedtime to promote restful sleep. Limit content for the hour for bed to less stimulating items for example Podcasts, Audiobooks and Kindle books.
- Turn Screens to Nightshift: Encourage nightshift mode whilst completing homework in the evening.
- Create a Family Charging Zone: Keep phones out of bedrooms by charging them in a different location overnight. Use Jamf parent App lock feature to hide all apps except the clock.
- Establish Tech-Free Zones: Make areas like the dining table and bedrooms technology-free to encourage face-to-face conversations and rest.
- Use App Timers and/or Jamf Parent to set daily limits on social media and entertainment apps to prevent overuse.
- Limit app downloads with Jamf parent Disable install and Delete
- Setup 'Ask to Buy on family Sharing: Ensure all apps are appropriate.
- Disable in app purchases: Download yourself and check. Use the website Common sense media for advice.
- Regularly Review Apps Together: Help children assess which apps serve them well and which could be uninstalled.
- Model Healthy Habits as a family: Lead by example with balanced screen time and mindful use of devices.
- Apply time restrictions & discuss online boundaries: Talk about healthy online behaviour, including screen breaks and how to avoid doom-scrolling.
- Promote Mindful Tech Use: Teach children to ask themselves if their screen time is purposeful or just a habit.
